What is a Pincode?

A PIN code (Postal Index Number) is a 6-digit code used by India Post to identify specific post offices and delivery areas across India. Introduced on August 15, 1972, the PIN code system was implemented to simplify the sorting and delivery of mail in India.

How Does the Pincode System Work?

The first digit represents one of nine postal zones in India. The second digit, combined with the first, represents a sub-zone. The third digit represents the sorting district within the sub-zone. The last three digits represent the specific post office within the sorting district.
